How To Check Purity Of Gold Jewellery?

Gold jewellery is very important in Indian culture. It is handed down through from generation to generations. Gold jewellery is an asset like property, money & land. Indian women love to wear gold jewellery . Gold is very beautiful to wear & does not react with other metals to create tarnish. Gold is friendly wear metal.

Purity of gold will be checked on basis of some factors:

• Flexibility
• Weight of gold Ornaments
• Shine & colour of gold
• Sound
• Acid test

Pure gold ornaments always flexible except design is heavy on ornaments.If weight of bangle is 7-8 gram then it should be flexible. If weight will increase flexibility will decrease.

Gold ornaments are less in weight than they actual seen.For exp if any gold chain is looking bulky but when you’ll weigh it ,you will find it of less weight.

Gold is shining & yellow in color, if it is blackish then it is low purity.

Hollow gold ornaments always tinkling sound. You can check it with plain bangles if it is tinkling then it is of good quality gold.

Touch stone Test : Take any gold ornament & rub it on black touch stone, put nitric acid with glass stick on touch stone & put salt water on it with glass stick. If there is no reaction on touch stone then gold is of good quality. If it turns to green color then it is low purity or if it disappear , gold is spurious.

Gold is very soft & Scratched easily i.e it is not possible to make gold jewellery without alloying with copper & silver. Gold jewellery is make up of different designs & shapes so proportionate mixing is necessary. Mixing make the ornaments more durable. To change the color of gold, palladium & nickel mixed for white gold. Silver added to give greenish cast, copper added to change color to rose or pink tint.

Now a days, jewellers cheating to  the customers So be careful in buying gold from jewellers. 24 carat is pure gold but gold ornaments always made in 22 carat gold by mixing of copper & silver.

In south India, gold coins are of 1gm, 2 gm, 4gm, 8m, 20 gm, 100gm & so on. In north it comes under denomination of 1gm, 2gm, 5gm, 8 gm, 10 gm, 20 gm ,100 gm & so on. So point to tell you all that is pure 24 carat 999.9 coin will show exactly weight. Suppose if it is 4gm then it will show on weighing machine exactly 4 gm not 3.9gm or not 4.1 gm. Sound should be tinkling.

Coins should be bought in temper proof packing from banks(HDFC, Federal bank, Indian overseas), NBFCs ( Muthoot Fincorp, Muthoot finance),Suisse coins etc.

1. Always buy Hallmark jewellery & 22 carat.
2. Avoid stoned jewellery because diamond jewelry made in 18 carat to increase the hardness of ornament to embed the stones.
3. Try to choose simple & light designs in ornaments.
4. Avoid to take hard ornaments. Ornaments should be flexible.
5. Finishing of ornaments should be very fine.
6. Avoid to buy gold plated, gold Covering ornaments because that is not durable & tarnish very soon.
